I.The Legislative Council notes the considerable hardship suffered by farmers in the north-east of this State due to exceptional circumstances, including drought and insect plague, and the refusal by the Federal Government to grant assistance to these farmers while it has assisted farmers suffering similar hardship in the adjoining area of New South Wales. II.This Legislative Council therefore calls on the State Government to more actively lobby its Federal colleagues to support the application by farmers in the north-east of our State for financial assistance.
The Hon. IAN GILFILLAN: I take the opportunity to indicate the Democrats' support for the motion and to add the codicil that it does appear to be frustrating and almost a dead-end road in approaching the Federal Government for assistance. Given that the State Government is so concerned about it, perhaps some source of revenue could be applied at least to reduce in the short term some of the suffering of these people. I am not being facetious when I say that there may be a bit of cream on top of the emergency services levy.
