SUPPLEMENTARY POLICE TRAINING LONG OVERDUE
Yesterdays announcement of additional police training for high risk situations is a positive step, but long overdue the Democrats have said today.
Democrats Shadow Minister for Police, Ian Gilfillan has welcomed the initiative but questions whether it goes far enough, suggesting the use of firearms by police should only be the absolute last resort.
"I welcome the training scheme launched by Police Commissioner, Mal Hyde, but there are still unanswered questions.
"I have repeatedly called on the Government to address the issue of adequate police training for high risk situations. Specialised training needs to begin at the cadet level.
"The erosion of police cadet training means our police are not equipped to deal with challenging situations, such as confronting people who have mental health problems.
"Tragically, two police shootings this year have resulted in the death of two men.
Skilled negotiation could have prevented this.
"The community and the police force deserve the protection offered by a higher level of incident training. Christmas is a stressful time for many people, we need the assurance that our law enforcement officers will display tolerance and understanding in all circumstances."
