Ian Gilfillan
News Release
Monday 24th May 1999"KILL-OLOGY"
GUNS, KNIVES, VIDEO GAMES AND THE FEAR OF CRIME
Anti-violence campaigner Ian Gilfillan will be giving a keynote address tonight to a discussion forum on public safety.
A founder of the SA branch of the Gun Control Coalition, Mr Gilfillan has recently (see Hansard: 11 March 1999) turned his attention to knives, and the SA laws which allow criminals to carry knives in public with impunity.
His address tonight will also touch on the role played by violent video games in training real-life teenage killers, with examples from the United States.
"There is considerable recent research by psychologists into the subject of killology that is, the combination of effects which can desensitise people away from their natural inclination not to harm others.
"We dont have potential killers lurking on every street corner," Mr Gilfillan says, "and I have been critical (see Hansard: 10 March 1999) of those who seek to whip up fear for their own purposes.
"But we do need to know what the real risks and dangers are. We need accurate information about the source of present and future real dangers in our society, so that we can prevent violence or violent trends from emerging.
"Accurate information is an essential pre-requisite for appropriate legislation."
The Public Meeting is to be held at 711 South Rd, Blackforest, from 7.45pm
All welcome.
