WORLD SUSTAINABLE ENERGY DAY
The Australian Democrats want the new Labor Government to use World Sustainable Energy Day (which is today) as an opportunity to set clear time-lines to achieve their election promises on sustainable energy.
"For the State Government to set clear target dates for their sustainable energy promises would not only be sign of good faith to the people of South Australia but would also aid more open and accountable government," said Australian Democrats’ leader, Mike Elliott, today.
"The Democrats welcome the establishment of a Sustainable Energy Advisory Council, but when will it be established?
"We are pleased to see the rapid emergence of wind power generators across the state as an alternative energy source, but these developments need to be integrated into the current system now, not in three or four years time.
"The Democrats also welcome a promised reduction of energy consumption in government buildings by fifteen per cent, but departments need a clear timeline to achieve their targets.
"The ALP has also promised to work with Local Government to encourage more energy efficient homes being built. With the current housing boom it is important that these initiatives are outlined and established quickly.
"While South Australians understand that it will take time to entrench more sustainable energy practices in South Australia, the process can only be assisted by clear time-frames and targets."
