HOWARD VICTORY LEAVES SOUTH AUSTRALIA ON THE EDGE OF DARKNESS

The Howard Government’s return at the Federal election has greatly increased the odds of South Australia becoming Australia’s high-level nuclear waste dump, say the Australian Democrats.

"To cut those odds I’ll give notice in state parliament today of the re-introduction of the Nuclear Waste Storage Facility (Prohibition) Bill to prevent the importation of nuclear waste into South Australia," says Sandra Kanck, Democrats Deputy Leader.

"Debate on my Bill will enable the people of South Australia to refresh their memories as to which parties and which parliamentarians are in favour of turning SA’s outback into a nuclear dump."

The Federal and State Governments are committed to establishing a national low-level waste repository on Commonwealth land in the north of the state, despite the vast majority of South Australians being vehemently opposed.

"As sure as night follows day the establishment of a low-level nuclear waste dump will lead to the co-location of high-level nuclear waste at the same site," says Ms Kanck.

"Having expended considerable money and political capital establishing a low-level nuclear waste dump no federal government would go through the same cost locating a high-level one in another state.

"We must stop South Australia becoming a nuclear dump for the next 250,000.

"State parliament passing a Bill prohibiting the location of a low-level nuclear waste dump in South Australia would be the first step in that process. "
