SOUTHERN EXPRESSWAY : SUBURBAN CHOKEWAY
The opening of the extension of the Southern Expressway will lead to an increase in cars, congestion, pollution and accidents on arterial roads connecting the city with Darlington, say the Australian Democrats.
"South Road, Marion Road and Goodwood Road already carry bumper to bumper traffic during peak hour," says Sandra Kanck, Democrats Transport spokesperson.
"The extension of the Southern Expressway will feed more cars into the congestion, slowing traffic and extending peak hour.
"The madness of the expressway is that in a few short years gains in time made by travelling it will be lost in traffic jams north of Darlington.
"We desperately need a strategy that encourages people out of their cars and onto public transport.
"For the long-term good of our environment and properly planned movement of people around Adelaide, the State Government should have put its money into providing fast, efficient public transport for the outer suburbs.
"Extending the Noarlunga line would have been a sensible option.
"By putting the limited supply of State Government money into more roads the people of the southern suburbs are virtually forced to travel by car.
"By contrast, in the forward-thinking Canadian city of Vancouver, their transport authority is extending both their tram and train systems in order to entice people into not using their cars. The planning is working with residents living near their lines making decisions not to buy a second car for the family and some making decisions not to buy a car at all."
