TAXPAYERS FUND SIMULTANEOUS ADHD INQUIRIES
The Australian Democrats want the State Government to prove it is not playing politics with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
"Amphetamine use for ADHD has skyrocketed over the last decade due to a lack of adequate services, and the Australian Democrats have worked with the community to understand this problem over the last four years," says Australian Democrats Leader, Mike Elliott.
"Yet today the State Government starts an inquiry to find answers to the ADHD problem by the end of the month!
"While the Democrats support any move that will help the families of children with ADHD, the Government’s long overdue response raises important questions.
"How does the State Government justify a second taxpayer funded inquiry when an all party standing committee is already taking submissions on ADHD?
"Why does the new inquiry have less than a month to consider a disorder that has prompted amphetamine use for children in South Australia to grow from less than 100 to over 5,500 since 1991?
"How does the new inquiry intend to incorporate local research that shows amphetamine use is greater in areas of lower income and employment?
"How will the new inquiry include community consultation, given research shows that families seek ADHD diagnosis because of inadequate responses by government departments?
"The Australian Democrats join the Attention Deficits Association of SA in questioning the adequacy of the State Government’s response.
"To prove it is serious in its intention, the Government should support Democrats’ amendments to the Equal Opportunity Act (which will bring the Act in line with national standards and provide more support for young people with ADHD).
"Having advocated for the rights of families for four years and instigated an all party inquiry into services for ADHD, the Australian Democrats call on the State Government to prove it has vision beyond the next election."
