COURT GIVES MOBIL A SLAP ON THE WRIST
The Australian Democrats are urging the State Government to appeal against the adequacy of the $50,000 fine levied against Mobil for the spillage of 270,000 litres of oil at Port Stanvac on the 28th of June 1999.
"$50,000 amounts to nothing more than a slap on the wrist for an international oil giant like Mobil," says Sandra Kanck, Democrats Transport spokesperson.
The State Government has recognised the current maximum fine of $200,000 is totally inadequate and is amending the Protection of Marine Waters (Prevention of Pollution from Ships) Amendment Bill to raise the maximum fine for such spills to $1 million.
"Despite this the presiding magistrate has decided to reduced the fine to a paltry $50,000," says Ms Kanck.
"We need the highest level of vigilance to protect our marine environment.
"Fining Mobil just $50,000 for spewing 270,000 litres of oil into Gulf St Vincent will send all the wrong signals regarding environmental protection.
"If the State Government is to be seen as fair dinkum in protecting the marine environment it will move immediately to appeal against the leniency of the fine.
"If it doesn’t it will send a clear message that the environment doesn’t rate as a matter of importance."
