TWO CENTURIES OF HEALTH EXPERTISE GONE
Two centuries of administrative health expertise in South Australia has gone down the drain in the last three years, say the Australian Democrats.
"Incessant meddling by state government bureaucrats in the selection and promotion of senior health administrators has contributed to our most experienced health experts leaving the system in droves," says Sandra Kanck, Democrats Health Spokesperson.
"Many of these people have departed the State, others have departed the health system vowing never to re-enter.
"The final decision regarding the appointment of senior health officials should be left in the hands of the boards of our public health institutions. That’s what we pay them for, that’s what they should do.
"The current arrangement granting the Department of Health an effective right of veto on senior appointments is undermining confidence throughout the public health system.
"Fifteen senior health officials with an average of 14 years experience each have gone, leaving a health expertise black hole.
"We are now left with a system top heavy with bureaucrats, many with no health experience, advising the Minister.
"The collective head has been lopped off the health bureaucracy at the moment wise counsel is needed the most.
"The impact of the loss of experienced administrators is placing ever greater pressure on all health practitioners. The recent exodus of six senior nursing staff from the Emergency Department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is symptomatic of the problem.
