OLSEN ALLOWS RUBBISH TO POLLUTE THE MURRAY
The Olsen Government has demonstrated its lack of commitment to restoring the River Murray by denying a request for funding from the Berri Barmera Council to stop stormwater fouling the river and Lake Bonney.
Ian Gilfillan, Australian Democrats Shadow Minister for Regional Development, is stunned at this lack of commitment.
"This Government seems more interested in creating the impression that it is saving the river rather than actually doing it. How hollow are the Liberals promises?"
The Council was seeking funding for three projects through the Catchment Management Subsidy Scheme (formerly the Drainage Subsidy Scheme).
Last September this scheme had its funding halved to just $1.95 million, despite the fact applications to the scheme have reached almost $10 million.
Mr Gilfillan says, "Stormwater carries debris, harmful nutrients and bacteria which create not only environmental problems, but health hazards. Preventing polluted water from entering the nations greatest waterway should be high on the states agenda."
"None of Premier John Olsens political rhetoric or photographic opportunities will save the river."
"We need action, actions such as those of the Berri Barmera Council which should be commended for trying to prevent the further degradation of the River Murray and its environs."
Mr Gilfillan says, "If Mr Olsen is serious about the River Murray he will approve the funding for the council and offer financial support to other local communities fighting to save this states life line."
