REPROCLAIM GAMMONS & REVIEW NATIONAL PARKS
In the wake of the BHP decision not to renew its mining lease for the Gammon Ranges National Park, the Australian Democrats have called on the state government to reproclaim the park as part of a state wide national park review.
"I welcome BHP’s decision not to renew its mining lease in the Gammon Ranges National Park, but I have concerns that another company may just step into its place," Australian Democrats leader, Mike Elliott, said today.
"The state government’s blatant disregard for community opposition to mining in our national parks has cast a shadow over every national and conservation park in the state.
"The state government’s track record shows that they have little commitment to nature conservation.
"It is one of opening up pristine parks and world heritage areas like Yumbarra and Coongie Lakes to mineral exploration. Only the community conscience of BHP has saved the Gammon Ranges.
"Now is the time to enshrine our natural heritage for future generations.
"My argument is not for or against mining, it is about the way our state government sells out on our valuable national parks without any adequate analysis of the consequences.
"This is why a full review of our National Parks is imperative. Only then will we be able to balance environmental and economic interests.
"South Australia needs a review of all areas of remaining native vegetation and a preparedness to give absolute priority on the basis of that review."
