ECO-TOURISM LEADER TO TAKE ON BROWN
The Australian Democrats have selected long-time eco-tourism champion, and community leader, John Lavers to contest the Democrats-winnable seat of Finniss at the next State election.
Democrats State president Ian Gilfillan says hes proud to confirm John Lavers candidacy and looks forward to a good contest in the marginal Liberal-held seat.
"John Lavers stood for the Australian Democrats in Finniss at the 1997 State election and came close to winning the seat. Based on the 1997 voting figures, and the new boundaries, the Research Service of the Parliamentary Library calculates that only a 4.1% swing is needed for the Democrats to take Finniss in 2001.
"John is a small business operator who also has an excellent record in developing and promoting the eco-tourism industry on Kangaroo Island and Fleurieu Peninsula. He began his business with the first scuba diving school at American Beach. It has expanded to include backpacker accommodation, wildlife tours and a café.
"Among John Lavers' other roles are:
"John is also winning community support for the establishment of a Marine Park in Backstairs Passage. He has already played a leading role in protecting the areas pristine marine environment, by helping to prevent the establishment of tuna feeding lots along the Kangaroo Island coast.
