DELAYS OVER INMAN RIVER POLLUTION MUST STOP
The Australian Democrats today called on the state government to finally clean up the Inman River.
State Cabinet will meet in Victor Harbor next week which will provide an excellent opportunity to provide local residents with the answer they have been waiting for says Australian Democrats leader, Mike Elliott.
"The state government’s neglect of regional waterways has put its water resource credibility in serious doubt," Australian Democrats leader, Mike Elliott, said today.
"Despite all the fanfare about saving the River Murray, the state government continues to delay action to prevent sewage seeping into the Inman River.
"The state government promised to fix the problem before the last election, then it promised $4m in last years budget to clean up the Inman River.
"The latest information that Victor Harbor residents received was that they now have to wait until June 2002 for some sort of solution to be in place.
"Three years, almost $18 million of budgeted promises, but still no action.
"In May we asked the state government in parliament to explain the delays but we are still yet to receive any answers (see attached).
"While the Democrats have reservations about the location of the proposed treatment plant, we believe that after three years the people of Victor Harbor deserve some straight answers.
"The state government cannot continue to put at threat the health of residents and visitors to one of South Australia’s premier tourist destinations."
