DEMOCRATS TELL OLSEN HES DREAMING
"Premier Olsen's promise to reduce South Australia's unemployment rate to below the national level is looking more and more like a dream."
This was the response of Australian Democrats leader, Mike Elliott, to the release of today's ABS labour force figures.
"Australia has been experiencing one of the longest periods of national economic growth and the state government has been riding on the coat tails of this growth, but it seems Premier Olsens ride has come to an abrupt end," Mr Elliott said.
"While the national employment rate remains steady at 6.8% (in seasonally adjusted terms) and trend figures show over a year of strong national employment growth, the picture is not so promising for South Australia.
"South Australias employment growth has stalled at 8.1% in trend figures and rose by 1.0% to 8.7% in seasonally adjusted figures. In effect there are 7,400 more South Australians unemployed than at this time last month.
"The state government, by piggy-backing on strong national employment growth, has denied South Australia unemployment rates as low as 5.8% (NSW) and 6.6% (Vic).
"Unless Premier Olsen offers real leadership to South Australia, his employment promise is destined to remain a dream."
