NO JOB SECURITY FOR YOUNG OR REGIONAL SOUTH AUSTRALIANS
On the release of Januarys ABS Labour Force Statistics, the Australian Democrats have demanded the state government immediately address youth and regional unemployment.
"Every month the picture becomes more and more bleak for young people, or those in regional areas, looking for full time work," said Australian Democrats acting spokesperson on employment, Sandra Kanck.
"This month there are 41,000 more South Australians in part time and casual work, and 10,700 less in full time work than when the government came into office in 1994.
"No doubt the state government will continue to label this split of full time jobs into more part time and casual jobs as employment growth. This is outright deception because just last month 10,700 full time jobs were lost to South Australia.
"State government inaction is forcing young people to the city and into casual work.
"Casual employment offers no job security and has an adverse effect on the larger housing and manufacturing sector purchases that are crucial to the South Australian economy.
"Even when casual and part time employment is taken into account, South Australia retains the highest youth unemployment rate in the nation at 31.6%.
"And figures released by Department of Employment, Workplace Relations and Small Business for last year show that regional employment is high.
"Unemployment in Whyalla is almost 2% higher than the state average at 9.6%, and higher than other cities such as Renmark (8.2%) and Mount Gambier (8.8%).
"Coober Pedy (13.9%), Wallaroo (13.4%), Port Elliott and Goolwa (13.3%) have the highest unemployment rates in regional South Australia.
"The state government must not continue to neglect the plight of young and regional South Australians."
